Port Adelaide’s 2021 season has been filled with euphoric wins, gutsy performances, and incredible determination. Taking out 16 of the 21 games during the home and away season has seen Port Adelaide rewarded with a preliminary final on home turf at Adelaide Oval against the Western Bulldogs.

We explore their road to the finals with some highlights from the season.

Our top take outs…

Taking the Top Four

Port Adelaide has shown amazing resilience throughout the year, dealing with a horror run of injuries early on in the season. Starting strong with wins over North Melbourne, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton, Port Adelaide made their intentions for 2021 clear. Surging into the top four with a gutsy win against St Kilda 10.14 (71 to 8.13 (61), this was a pivotal game for the team. Mitch Georgiades had a career-best four goals to his name, while vice-captain Ollie Wines continued to show why he is in contention for a Brownlow Medal this year.

Showdown time

What a win for Port Adelaide, taking out the 49th showdown by 49 points. Battling it out against the Adelaide Crows in wet conditions, Port Adelaide took the game 12.15 (87) to 5.8 (38). Key players included Robbie Gray and Charlie Dixon, both making a huge impact on the scoreboard. Travis Boak was also a stand out, taking home his third Showdown medal. Port Adelaide backed up this result at Showdown 50, with a tight 7.13 (55) to 7.9 (51) finish. Aliir Aliir put in an incredible performance, finishing with 21 disposals and taking home the Showdown medal.

300 games

Fan favourite Travis Boak celebrated his 300th game in style with a win over Collingwood 14.13 (97) to 10.9 (69) at Marvel Stadium. Despite a slow first quarter, Port Adelaide solidified their top four spot, aided by strong performances from Charlie Dixon and Todd Marshall. With 28 disposals to his name, Travis Boak was a stand out of the game, becoming just the second player in Port Adelaide’s proud history to reach the 300 match milestone.

Road to the finals

Running away with the game against Carlton at Adelaide Oval, Port Adelaide comfortably took the win by a staggering 95 points, finishing 21.14 (140) to 5.15 (45). The game put Port Adelaide within reach of a top two finish. Finally, a nail-biting come-from-behind win against the Western Bulldogs 9.12 (66) to 10.4 (64) cemented Port Adelaide’s position to take part in finals football in 2021. The game saw Robbie Gray give Port Adelaide the lead they needed with less than five minutes remaining. Spurring the team into a brilliant final burst in the fourth quarter, Ollie Wines scored before Travis Boak added to the tally.

This week, Port Adelaide will take on Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Good luck to the entire team for their preliminary final!
