Australian Outdoor Living’s 12-week step challenge proved to be a hit among employees.
Australian Outdoor Living is a company passionate about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
It is that passion which drives them to push their employees to look after both their physical and mental well-being.
Earlier this year they encouraged their team at the company’s headquarters to participate in the 12-Week Step Challenge – a program designed to increase the amount of steps taken each day.
The challenge required participants to walk 10,000 steps a day for 12 weeks.
National Marketing Manager Alex McConville was the brains behind the challenge, with the inspiration being his love of healthy living.
“Being passionate about health and well-being, I decided on introducing a step challenge for the Marketing team,” he said.
“I also thought it would help to promote team bonding.”
Mr McConville was surprised when his suggestion was met with such a positive reaction.
“After the rest of HQ got wind, they all wanted to jump on board,” he said.
“I was overwhelmed by the response and buy from the staff, who all put a great deal of effort into pushing themselves to keep their step-count up.”
During the 12-week step challenge, employees managed to walk a combined 20 million steps, equating to about 16,000 kilometres.
That’s equal to one lap around Australia.
Mr McConville was happy to see employees embrace the challenge.
“I think that many were surprised with how well they did and it certainly encouraged staff to get up from their desks and out of the office in their lunch break,” he said.
“It was great to see them enjoy the outdoors – after all we are all about outdoor living.”
Social Media Coordinator Hanna Tomkins said the challenge had a positive impact on the team.
“The HQ team embraced the step challenge. Who knew we could all be so competitive?” she laughed.
“I noticed that after making a conscious effort to move throughout the day that I was less restless and my back pain improved.”
“I definitely think it’s something all workplaces should encourage.”
Mr McConville said that the popularity of the challenge meant that he would try and organise another one later in the year.
“I hope that people finished the challenge feeling healthier and happier and closer to their team mates,” he said.
“We’ll look to run another in the spring if anyone is keen.”
