Backyard Tour | Making the most of a small outdoor space (Alberton, South Australia)

Do you have a small backyard? Meet Melissa, a Nurse from Alberton, South Australia. She lives in an old Duplex Cottage, built in the 1900s. A gorgeous home on a small 433m2 block, she wanted to turn her backyard—which was a bare space with no landscaping—into somewhere she could relax and make the most of her time off.

The challenge for Australian Outdoor Living was to ultimately turn the small space into a lively but functional area that is usable all year round.

Let us take you on a tour of this backyard transformation…

The entrance

We start our tour at the entrance of the backyard area, with a verandah and carport combination. These elements provide shelter to Melissa, as well as her personal belongings. The verandah is designed to stretch across the entire back of the home; its hipped, timber design complementing the heritage style of the cottage.

She opted for a classic cream verandah and carport, with screening to enclose the area and provide additional privacy from the neighbour’s backyard. The addition of a sunroof allows light to come in, which will come in handy for the cooler months when you need the extra sunshine. With minimal furniture and a mixture of light and dark tones in the space, this modern contemporary zone feels light, open, and inviting. The perfect entertaining area.

The pool zone

Moving from the sheltered area and into the pool zone, a fibreglass pool from the Venice range is situated to the side, to allow for suitable walking space to the back retreat. Fibreglass pools are a great budget friendly option. They create a picturesque oasis just a few steps from your back door. The Venice range, in particular, offers a timeless, prestige look, with a sophisticated shape and an interrupted swimming area. Tailored to suit her needs, this pool—featuring shell colour ‘Royal Blue’—boasts generous seating, as well as four massage jets, for ultimate comfort and relaxation.

The colour palette for this zone remains consistent, featuring neutral shell and coping colours.

This sophisticated pathway design leads to the third and final zone – a standalone hipped pergola and timber decking area. A relaxation nook that seamlessly blends into the rest of the space.

The relaxation nook

This relaxation nook features a hardwood merbau deck, which lends an organic feel to the space, whilst remaining sleek and contemporary. It complements the pergola structure beautifully, ultimately resulting in an aesthetically pleasing space to relax and admire the backyard. The addition of the overhead shelter has made sure that the zone that can be enjoyed all year round.

The vine detailing adds a lovely organic touch to the statement piece. This is a detail that customers often opt for, and it’s easy to see why. Adding pops of colour and greenery helps bring a level of country charm and a relaxed finish to the cottage’s exterior.

How to achieve this look:

  • Opt for neutral and earthy tones. For overhead structures, like pergolas and carports, this is especially important. Keep your colour scheme consistent.
  • Create different ‘zones’ to open up your space; we’ve used a fibreglass pool and decked flooring to break up the zones.
