We’ve got some great tips on how to create a dog friendly backyard.

Watching your dog delight in bounding around the backyard is a joy that all dog owners can relate to. Keeping your dog happy will obviously be beneficial for its health, but creating a dog friendly backyard will also mean they’ll be less likely to destroy your garden.

Follow these simple hacks to make sure your dog stays healthy and happy while hanging out in your dog-friendly backyard backyard.

Our tips include:

  • Install a tall enough fence to make sure they have boundaries
  • Create a garden path for them to patrol
  • Build a water park for the warmer months
  • Install artificial grass
  • Create a digging area

We guarantee if you follow these tips, your pup will be one happy pooch!

Keep your pup safe and sound

We can probably agree that the safety of your pooch is the most important thing of all.

Anyone who knows dogs will be aware that they need boundaries – you don’t want your pup roaming out of your yard and onto the road.

Installing some sort of fence is usually the best way to keep your dog from escaping.

There are plenty of ways to build a fence that fits with the style of your home, but you do need to build a fence that suits the type of dog you have.

Some dogs are excellent jumpers, so if you’ve got a breed that loves to bound, make sure it’s high enough to keep them in.

Dogs also love to patrol, so giving your pup a boundary to check several times a day will keep them content for long periods of time.

Set up a path

You can even go one step further and actually build a path for them patrol.

Create a small one along your property line, or observe their existing walking route and build one along that.

Go one step further and plant a screen to hide the path from view – pups love having a secret space to run around in.

You could also install a tunnel along the path.

If you have multiple dogs or children, they’ll love chasing each other along the path and through the tunnel.

Tunnels can also double as shade on hot days, which is something your pooches will be grateful for once summer hits.

Create a water park

Access to plenty of fresh water is essential for any dog, so building a small water feature is a great way to keep your dog cool in the summer.

They’ll love having somewhere to splash about on a hot day, and watching them enjoy the water will always put a smile on your face.

You have to be careful though – be sure to keep an eye on your pooch if they’re not confident in water.

It’s important they can get out easily if need be, so make sure your feature has gently sloping sides or easily accessible steps.

Install artificial lawn in your dog friendly backyard

Artificial lawn can be a great place to play for both children and pets.

It’s soft and safe and your pups won’t be able to dig it up.

The only maintenance it requires is the occasional spray with a garden hose, and it stays neat, tidy and green all year round.

Since it’s so low-maintenance, you’ll have plenty of spare time to spend relaxing with your pups in your backyard. It’s a win-win!

Create a digging area

If artificial grass isn’t your cup of tea, but you’re still looking for ways to stop your pups digging, look at creating a digging area.

First of all, set aside an area of your yard where you’re happy for your dogs to dig.

Next, lay down mulch or sand so your dogs won’t hurt their paws.

Train them to dig there by burying toys or bones – once they’re used to it they’ll likely start burying their own bones and toys there.

This method will hopefully prevent your pups from digging up the rest of your yard!

Any or all of these suggestions will hopefully help keep your dog happy and healthy in your backyard.
