Australian Outdoor Living’s top tips for attracting native wildlife to your backyard

There’s nothing like listening to the gentle sounds of birds singing in the trees right outside your back door.

Whether you’re lucky enough to have a large property out in the country or a smaller block in an urban area, there are plenty ways to attract wildlife to your backyard and create your own peaceful little nature reserve.

Unfortunately some of our native species face the problem of new predators and higher levels of competition for habitat, food and shelter.

Providing an environment with plenty of shelter and an abundance of food and water sources will keep wildlife in your garden.

Below we’ve listed five recommendations to help you create your very own wildlife sanctuary.

1. Provide a wildlife-friendly yard

Native wildlife is facing more and more levels of competition for habitat, food and shelter. Providing wildlife with plenty of cover by planting native trees and bushes will give them more reason to stay.

In addition to shelter, native plants are an important source of berries, nuts and nectar for wildlife.

A backyard that is just grass does not provide wildlife with a lot of shelter or anything to play with.

Adding flowering plants and hedges are a great way to provide a relaxing refuge for animals seeking cover from predators.

2. Plant the right plants

The best way to make sure your own little ecosystem flourishes is to plant a garden full of plants native to your area.

It’s important you have plants that are native to your area as you know that they will withstand the climate of your location.

It’s also great for native animals who may rely on these plants to survive, as it will give them more reason to come to your backyard.

To know what the right plants are for your home, pop down to your local nursery and ask for native plants suited to your geographical location.

Your council’s website should also provide a list of the best plants if you’re looking for somewhere to start.

3. Provide food and water

If you want to attract native wildlife to your backyard, it is important that you provide them with plenty of food and water.

Depending on what native wildlife you have around you, your selection of plants should provide them with adequate nectar and seeds all year round.

Banksias are ideal plants for attracting birds, as they offer nectar and seeds that are favourites among a wide variety of species. This will encourage birds to visit, and more importantly, return.

One clever and unique way to attract a variety of birds is by installing a bird feeder in your backyard.

If you’re looking to have those feathered friends entertain you with their antics in the warmer months, you can’t go past a bird pool or bird bath.

Keep in mind, like with any pet they will require clean, fresh water on a regular basis.

4. Provide safety & shelter

Some animals prefer open areas where visibility is good, whereas others prefer shrubs and hidden nooks to relax in.

Increase the appeal of your backyard to native wildlife by ensuring you cater to their preferences. Make sure they can seek shelter from the elements and foreign predators.

Native trees and bushes are a great place to start, or if you want your yard to look more appealing you can have a hedge or native flowering plants.

5. Keep your animals inside

Unfortunately, for you to attract wildlife to your backyard you may need to keep your own animals inside.

You want to provide a nurturing and safe environment for your native locals, so having your dogs or cats outside might stop them from wanting to come for a visit.

If your animals love spending time outside, consider blocking off the area where you are trying to attract native wildlife.
