What a 4-quarter performance!
Port have almost secured a top 4 spot on the ladder with an excellent display of football against Fremantle, defeating the Western Australian team 18.7 (115) to 9.15 (69) at Adelaide Oval.
Our top take outs:
Port have improved on their previous first quarter performances, with a fiery, almost perfect start. They booted the first 7 goals, which set them up nicely for the rest of the match. They have previously been underperforming throughout their first quarters, racking up the lowest points on average compared to the other top 8 sides.
If we look at possession count, Port had Fremantle covered throughout all 4 quarters. They ended the game with a possession count of 130-61. Charlie Dixon and Sam Powell-Pepper helped rack up the numbers, with consistent Ollie Wines proving to be unstoppable too.
Karl Amon also deserves a mention. A widely underrated midfielder, he was an absolute star of the game on Sunday—with Mark Ricciuto even stating that he’s in Port’s top three best players this year.
A couple of worrying injuries have occurred. Orazio Fantasia and Ryan Burton have both suffered knee injuries. Whilst Burton’s knee can most likely be managed, Fantasia may not be so lucky, with a knee surgery potentially looming. This isn’t ideal for Port, with Fantasia being in arguably great form this season—19 goals from 10 appearances and counting.
Overall, Port are in a great position going into the bye. They still have a big fight ahead of them to secure their spot, but look ready for the challenge.
