What should you look for when buying artificial grass?

Artificial Turf has undergone many improvements since its inception in the 1970's, now providing a low maintenance and luxurious addition to any outdoor space.

Here at Australian Outdoor Living, we know a thing or two about Artificial Grass - and we know the market can be intimidating! So to help you out, we’ve put together a few pointers to guide you through the selection and buying process so you can get the best result possible, without all the stress.

1. Know your budget

Artificial Grass varies greatly in price, so you need to have a good idea of what your budget is before you venture out on your quest!

When determining your budget, remember that Artificial Lawn is a product that can vary greatly in quality, and typically the price you pay will reflect the quality you get.

Cheap, low budget Artificial grass can seem like an appealing choice; however the cheap option is easy to spot almost every time. Cheaper artificial lawns tend to come in narrower rolls, meaning you'll get more seams and joins, and a higher risk of lifting (or losing your lawn completely in windy conditions!).

Cheaper synthetic turf tends to have poor drainage (terrible for pets and rain), and, especially once installed, can look unusually uniform (like green carpet!) or sometimes give an odd, neon colour. Variations in the width of each blade, and attention to detail when it comes to creating depth and accuracy of colour are tantamount to creating a lush and realistic Artificial Lawn - and these are characteristics you simply can't buy on the cheap.

Further, low cost lawn simply doesn't withstand the harsh Australian climate - UV rays can cause low quality lawns to fade and become brittle quickly, requiring replacement much more frequently and costing more money in the long run.

We can help you  to find the perfect lawn solution to fit within your needs and budget.

2. Decide how you want to use your Artificial Lawn

Like natural lawn, tables and chairs will leave a little flat mark on your lawn where their legs were. If you’re planning on keeping outdoor furniture on your lawn, it may be wise to go for a denser, shorter turf, which will bounce back quickly should you ever need to move your furniture.

If you have a pool in your backyard, you may want to consider the benefits of having a neat, green finish around the edge, as well as choosing an option that won't burn bare feet when hopping out of the water on a hot summer day!

How you want your lawn to look is also hugely important! A natural looking Artificial Grass will boast many irregular blade, as well as a variety of natural colours to create a lifelike look.

It can help to head into a display or chat with one of our sales team to see our Artificial Lawns in person, allowing you to touch and feel each type before committing.

3. Consider who will be using your Artificial grass

It's really important to consider the needs of children and pets!

A dense, wide-blade lawn will create a soft feel for little humans and animals alike, and a good quality lawn with plenty of drainage is essential to create a space that's easy to clean and maintain for animal use.

Having your lawn professionally and perfectly installed will also benefit the smaller members of your household - when you let Australian Outdoor Living install your lawn, you never have to worry about pins or screws poking your little ones tiny toes, or having the lawn lift even under the most intense games of fetch or tug of war! Our high quality preparation and installation processes also ensure that your lawn won't develop lumps or bumps over time - keeping your outdoor area safe from tripping hazards.

4. Determine the right pile for your lifestyle

Make sure you choose a pile height that suits you and your backyard.

More luxurious artificial lawns have a pile height of around 35mm - perfect if you want your lawn to be soft and comfortable to walk on. These styles of lawn are perfect for those who want a luscious, high-end appearance that suits the low-maintenance family lifestyle.

If you plan on using your backyard for activities such as backyard cricket, a shorter pile height might be the best option for you. For those families who can't get enough of sports such as lawn bowls, soccer or even basketball, our low pile, ultra hard-wearing MultiSport lawn could be the way to go!

5. Choose from a company you can trust

Artificial Grass has become quite popular with an array of suppliers for Australians to choose from, so make sure you choose a company with a good reputation. One way to ensure the quality of the Artificial Lawn is to check whether it comes with a guarantee. At Australian Outdoor Living, we provide up to a 7-year warranty on all our lawns, giving you peace of mind. After all, it's an investment, so if any issues arise, they can be resolved quickly and with minimal hassle.

The right outdoor artificial grass, as well as its installation can make a huge difference to your outdoor area, bringing it alive and providing a low maintenance, useable space.
