2018 was a big year for our group of AOL-sponsored athletes.
Now that we’ve turned the corner into 2019, we thought we’d take a look back at their achievements over the past 12 months.
Matty Tidswell
Matty Tidswell is a BMX rider from Adelaide who first represented Australia way back in 2013 at the World Championships.
Since then he has compiled a long list of achievements, the most impressive of which was making the final at the 2017 BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, North Carolina.
Matty Tidswell eventually finished seventh overall out of 132 riders – an incredible effort from the talented youngster.
He improved even more in 2018 when he won the BMXSA World Championship Award in January, followed by a string of excellent results in Penrith, Perth and Frankston.
He later won the BMX State Series in September and October, and was then invited to the BMXA High Performance Camp to train with the Australian coaches.
January next year will cap off a huge season for the young rider, when he travels to New Zealand to compete in the UCI Oceania Race.
Matty also won the title of BMXSA Rider of the Year – an accolade that was the cherry on top of his stellar season.
Congratulations on a great year, Matty, and good luck in New Zealand!
Ty Lynch
Based in Adelaide, Ty Lynch travels around the country as a competitive motorcycle rider.
In June, Ty had the opportunity to coach some younger riders at an official launch event for Yamaha’s new Motor 65cc.
“It was such an awesome experience being out there – the kids were so excited,” he said.
Ty competed in the fifth round of the ASBK (Australian Superbike Championships) in August, but crashed his bike during the race.
“I managed to be fairly unscathed – [I was] a bit stiff and sore and left with a broken hand,” he said.
Ty Lynch moved on from this injury to qualify third in the Supersport category at the Cafnix SA Titles in September.
He also attended the Melbourne Moto Expo in November, where he was lucky enough to be part of the Baylisstic Team Challenge competing for a prize pool of $5,000.
Unfortunately they didn’t come away with the money, but according to Ty it was still a rewarding experience.
“I would like to thank everyone involved – without you all, what I do wouldn’t be possible,” he said.
Well done on a great year, Ty!
Cube Racing
Cube Racing’s Oli Bayliss finished 2018 on a high when he won the Supersport 300 category at the 2018 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in October.
The win came after the 15-year old’s father Troy Bayliss won the national Superbike class as well, topping off a thrilling day for the family.
“It feels really good to be back on top of the podium, especially at the last event of the year,” Troy said after his win.
Well done to the Bayliss family and everyone at Cube Racing.
