Victoria may be one of the smaller states in the country, but it still has its fair share of stunning road trip scenery. Have you ever wanted to just get in the car and get away from it all? The classic Aussie road trip is a rite of passage, with a number of people being able to recall piling into a car with mates and heading towards the horizon. But Australia is such a huge country – where should you go? Luckily for you, we’ve got that covered. In the coming weeks, we’ll be bringing you the best and most awe-inspiring road trips in each Aussie state and territory. We’re covering Victoria this week – which is fitting, since one of its state slogans is “On the move”! The Black Spur Drive The Black Spur Drive is perfect for a leisurely Sunday trip. If you’re the kind of person who likes to take a leisurely Sunday drive, look no further than the Black Spur. This route is only 20 kilometres long, but the winding roads and towering trees will make you lose yourself in the drive. The trees in this area are among the tallest flowering plants on Earth. They’re also incredibly dense – so much so that the sun barely penetrates through to the forest floor. Unfortunately there aren’t many places to pull over and admire the natural beauty of the region. You’ll find yourself wishing for a slow-moving truck just so you can take the time to see the sights! If time allows, keep driving to Marysville and loop back on the Acheron Way to Mount Donna Buang. You can also return to Healesville and head up into Toolangi State Forest. Both of these road trips will present you with some of the finest forest views in the country, so make sure you stop along the way and soak them up! The Great Ocean Road The Great Ocean Road is a must-see for any visitors to Victoria. Breathe in the fresh sea air and check out the 12 Apostles on the world famous Great Ocean Road. This picturesque coastal road trip is unique - you won't find anywhere else in Australia with quite as much natural beauty. The Southern Ocean lies on one side of the road, while the other side presents you with steep cliff faces. These drop away after a while though, at which point you come across beautiful coastal towns such as Lorne and Apollo Bay. You can even break tradition and head inland, where you’ll find some of Victoria’s best waterfalls: Beauchamp, Triplet and Hopetoun Falls. The Great Alpine Road The Great Alpine Road offers the most panoramic views in the state. This 310 kilometre drive from Bairnsdale to Wangaratta will leave even the most seasoned road-trippers in complete awe. Widely considered to be the ultimate Victorian road trip, you’ll need at least four days to fully appreciate this phenomenal drive through the mountains of Victoria. If you don’t mind the odd hike now and then, check out the trail to Mount Feathertop. Bring sturdy shoes though; the 22 kilometre round trip isn’t for the faint-hearted! The next step is to take the short, windy descent into the Ovens Valley. Here's a helpful hint: take the trip in autumn, because the colours are simply to die for! If you have time, make a side trip up Mount Buffalo and experience the awe-inspiring array of rock formations and panoramic views. This road trip ends in Wangaratta after a relaxing home stretch through some classic eucalypt country. The Calder Highway Clocking in at around 400 kilometres, this road trip from Bendigo to Mildura is the perfect weekend getaway. A lot of roads in Victoria are surrounded by tall trees and mountains as far as the eye can see – not this one, though. The Mallee is wide, flat and open, with a rich Indigenous cultural history full of ancient stories and rustic charm. Each one of the communities along the Calder is unique, and each one is a doorway to the region’s interesting history. Lake Tyrell is an absolute must-visit along this stretch of the countryside, with its salty surface producing beautiful reflections that have to be seen to be believed. This drive through the vast landscape of Victoria will truly bring you down to Earth and open your eyes to the incredible beauty of Australia. Looking for some vertical garden ideas?
