Award-winning Australian actress Teresa Palmer chose Australian Outdoor Living to build her dream concrete swimming pool at her rural home in the Adelaide Hills.
The Adelaide Hills region is one of the most stunning rural locations in the whole of Australia. Rolling hills overlooking the city combined with beautiful native Australian flora create a bushland paradise in South Australia’s largely perfect year-round climate.
Award-winning Australian actress Teresa Palmer and her husband Mark Webber have chosen to raise their young children in the quiet serenity the region has become known for.
“[We’ve got] 10 acres of land and just beautiful native Australian plants and lots of space,” she said.
A home among the gumtrees
The Palmers had always planned to install a swimming pool in their backyard – it just needed to work with the bushland surrounds.
“I’m big on aesthetics, and I wanted the pool to feel like it was meant to be here, like it was part of the land,” Teresa said.
According to Teresa, Australian Outdoor Living was instrumental in helping her design a pool to complement her backyard.
They were also able to include features unique to her build, including a centred spa section, an enlarged wading area for the kids, and a resort-style infinity wall overlooking the downward slope of her rural property.
Teresa said the custom-built infinity edge was her favourite aspect of the build.
“I remember going to some really fancy retreats and every one of them always had this beautiful pool with an infinity edge,” she said.
“We realised that we could actually use the edge of our land for the infinity edge. It’s quite lovely, because when you swim up there, looking out at the gorgeous trees, it’s just set in the most beautiful environment.”
Teresa and her husband were overseas for the duration of the build, making the process more difficult than usual.
General Manager of Australian Outdoor Living’s SA branch, David Wegener said that his team were able to adapt to accommodate Teresa’s absence.
“It was a difficult process as we couldn’t show Teresa and Mark in person,” he said.
“It all had to be done over email where colours aren’t always portrayed accurately.”
A bushland oasis
The colours and finish were one of the most important aspects of the build, with the Palmers requesting a colour scheme that fit in with the pool’s bushland surrounds.
“We were able to work with Teresa to create a colour scheme that didn’t just fit in with their property, but actually added to it,” he said.
“The colours of the tiles and coping were chosen specifically to complement the surrounds, and reflect the natural tones present on the bushland property.”
Teresa said she and her husband were delighted with the final product, saying their backyard now feels like a bushland resort.
“Every day, we wake up and feel like we’ve turned this property, from what was a really nice residential property, into one that is luxurious,” she said.
“It feels like a retreat now to us, and it was done in a way that just felt easy.”
