The 4 Best Outdoor Experiences in Queensland
Our series of best outdoor experiences has, so far, traversed the states of NSW, WA and SA and we’ve come up with some great outdoor activities for you and your family to check out in these respective states.
But we feel like we’ve arrived in Mecca now, Australia’s state of outdoor revelry.
We don’t really even have to put ‘outdoor’ in the title, it’s self-explanatory…like saying that Queensland has hot, sunny weather.
Or that Australia’s a great country.
The hardest part was picking the four entries that made the cut; our office was abuzz for days as we argued and debated – bars of chocolate were brought in to mediate – the merits of the shortlist candidates.
But like trying to pick the top 10 albums of all time, you’ll simply never reach a consensus.
So let us know your thoughts on our list and our omissions.
Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
Cairns is in the middle of tropical paradise.
Surrounded by rainforests, waterfalls and of course the Great Barrier Reef, it’s a great spot to make the most of the outdoors.
With Cairns as the starting point, the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway experience takes an hour and a half one way and provides you with a unique chance to see the rainforest safely and in a sustainable way. As you’d expect, there are two terminals.
In between is Red Peak station, nestled into the lovely rainforest and home to spectacular views.
If you’re looking for the full experience, take the cable car one way and the Kurunda Scenic Railway back.
Kurunda Scenic Railway was built over a century ago and winds its way through tropical mountain ranges between Cairns and Kurunda.
We guarantee you’ll love both.
There are some great Aboriginal art stores and galleries in the area too.
The Great Barrier Reef
After a leisurely cable car ride, you’ll be ready for a swim.
And where better than a 2,300km stretch of crystal waters, decorated with beautiful coral reefs just teeming with exotic marine life.
We are, of course, talking about the Great Barrier Reef, which never ceases to take our breath away.
It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Take your pick of snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, cruising, swimming or soak it all up in luxury on a cruise.
Really, the options are endless; the beauty too.
Just don’t be upset if you can’t find Nemo.
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
Head down to Southern Queensland and you’ll find the Gold Coast, which seems to radiate and glisten with white sandy beaches, skyscrapers and all sorts of fun activities, including the country’s best theme parks.
By all means, spend some time in Movie World, Wet’n’Wild, Dreamworld and the like.
They’re great: fun and entertaining.
But also make sure you add Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to your itinerary as well.
This heritage listed zoological garden is packed full of great events and attractions and houses one of the largest collections of Aussie native species around.
Be sure to see the free-flying Rainbow Lorikeet bird show, which is a spectacle due to the large numbers of them that flock to the sanctuary twice daily for a feed.
Another fantastic outdoor activity at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the Segway safari, a 40-minute guided tour on segways that shows off the sanctuary’s bush lands and rainforest.
Just a short drive and ferry ride from Brisbane, you’ll find the historic national park that is Moreton Island, a popular spot for day trips.
Whether you’re keen to go sandboarding, 4WDing, relaxing on the beautiful beaches or swimming in the blue lagoon or champagne pools, you’ll have the time of your life here.
Our all-time favourite activity on Moreton Island is the shipwreck snorkelling.
Part of Moreton Island features 15 sunken shipwrecks, which are now an irreplaceable part of the fabric of the place.
That’s reason enough but then throw in an array of colourful fish and you’ll never want to leave.
There you have it, four of our favourite outdoor activities that Queensland has to offer.
But naturally, once you’ve been and done all these amazing things, you’ll want to kick back and relax in your own outdoor space.
