Design your backyard with an outdoor bed
With summer on its way, we’re all looking forward to lazy days spent outside in the warmth and sunshine.
With so much beautiful weather, you’re bound to want to spend plenty of time outdoors, which means you’ll want comfy seating.
In that case you’ll love the latest rage in garden design: outdoor beds.

These babies are guaranteed to ensure you’ll never want to leave your al fresco haven.
And the design ideas out there are pretty incredible.
In fact, they make us want to ditch the office and catch some R&R in the sunshine right now.
Hanging beds and canopy beds are popping up over backyards across the country this summer.
We think they’re gorgeous and we know you’ll love them too.
There are some pretty snazzy places where you can buy outdoor daybeds, but take that option and you’re bound to spend a fair bit of dosh.
So we’ve compiled a few easy DIY tips for both bed designs to help you save the mullah and create your own masterpiece.
Outdoor swing beds
These outdoor swing beds take the cake for refreshing garden furniture design, not to mention cosiness!
They take the meaning of a porch swing to a whole new level, floating in mid-air like a hammock, but much more spacious and stable.
Imagine enjoying a good book as you swing against the soft breeze – you’ll just have to try not to fall asleep!
Hanging beds are a beautiful modern addition to your backyard and can easily be made with wood pallets or even an old trampoline frame.
You’ll need some heavy duty rope and a reliable support to hang the furniture from. Get inspiration with these images from DigsDigs.
You can build supports yourself, hang the bed from a strong tree branch, or even swing it off verandah or pergola beams.
The best thing is you can hang a swing bed over any surface, whether it’s a pool or pond, or overhanging a steep slope.
The more adventurous the location, the more novel the piece!

Canopy beds
We’re used to finding canopy beds in the home: old-fashioned four posters complete with airy curtains (the “canopy”) to give you some privacy.
But canopy beds are becoming a more popular furniture item in the backyard.
And who can argue with that when you see some of the amazing designs?
They really bring the exotic, romantic look into your garden.
You can make canopy beds out of both conventional daybeds and even our favourite hanging beds.
They make a great effect in a garden, with curtains billowing around a cushioned platform, enticing you into their beautiful lair.
And when designed with care, they can even provide a dual purpose of keeping the mozzies out.
Plus they’re perfect for creating some shade in an otherwise sunny backyard, so you can lie out there longer without fear of sunburn!

Canopy beds are a bit more complex to build on your own, and you’re probably going to need some rudimentary skills in carpentry at a minimum.
