Who would have thought that the 49th showdown would have been won by 49 points?
In wet conditions, the showdown was—at times—a close, fiery match between the two South Australian teams. But Port Adelaide FC were victorious over the Adelaide Crows in the first showdown of the year, beating their crosstown rivals 12.15 (87) to 5.8 (38).
Our top take outs…
Port Adelaide fan favourite Travis Boak continues to deliver career-best performances this year. You wouldn’t believe he’s 32 years old—he’s agile and highly influential, racking up 28 disposals and 10 contested possessions, as well as several score involvements and 6 clearances. He certainly deserved his third Showdown Medal.
Consistent members of the team, Robbie Gray and Ollie Wines, were also highly influential and don’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
After having a few rough weeks at the office, Charlie Dixon certainly has something to prove. He made a huge impact in this game, opening the match with his 11th goal of the season. In addition to this, 8 of his 14 disposals led to Port Adelaide hitting the score board. We look forward to seeing him perform at his best for the rest of the season.
Port Adelaide’s defence are a masterclass of the AFL. They held the Adelaide Crows to their second-lowest score in a showdown. The standout defender was Tom Clurey, who was on Adelaide’s Taylor Walker. Aliir Aliir also continues to be a great asset for Port Adelaide.
Their forward line up also did not disappoint, with 12 marks inside the forward 50. Young Todd Marshall booted 3 goals and no behinds, making him the top goal scorer of the game. With only 40 AFL matches to his name, he’s certainly an exciting key forward to watch.
